JPN306 Intro to JPN Lit

JPN 306: Introduction to Japanese Literature, II, 1600-1950

In this survey class, we will read a variety of Japanese literary works dating from seventeenth century to the end of the Second World War. While becoming familiar with artistic conventions, genre, and personages, we will examine how Japanese culture reacts to and shapes its historical context and reveals the dreams and anxieties of different social groups. As we read stories that have come to comprise the Japanese literary cannon, we will discuss gender, class, politics, war, travel, the rise of the city, and other issues that are still relevant today. We will also consider why Japanese culture has had a large international impact. This is the second part of a three-quarter course introducing Japanese literature and culture and covers the time periods between those studied in JPN305 and JPN307. Students who did not enroll in JPN305 are welcome take this class. All readings are in English, and no background knowledge of Japan is required.
