Chinese, Japanese and Korean Pedagogy

This is an advanced course in language pedagogy, which includes investigation of issues pertinent to the teaching of East Asian languages. The focus of this course is on communicative language teaching. We look at the goals and principles of communicative language teaching, the techniques associated with it and issues that arise when attempting to teach East Asian languages according to the communicative approach.

The course will include a schedule of classroom observation of classes in your chosen language (Chinese, Japanese or Korean). You will be required to observe (and/or assist) in 1-2 hours of classes per week and to keep a journal of your experiences. The course will also provide you with the chance to develop activities, practice teaching and receive feedback on your teaching from your peers.

Please note that this course focusses on general methodologies for language teaching and their application to East Asian languages. The course does not cover issues of how to teach individual points of Chinese, Japanese and Korean grammar. These issues are or will be covered in the current or proposed courses “Chinese Pedagogical Grammar”, “Japanese Pedagogical Grammar” and “Korean Pedagogical Grammar”.

Please also note that completion of third year Chinese, Japanese or Korean (or instructor approval) is required to take this course.
