EALL 608 will focus on identifying and honing the skills you need to get a job in the academic world. In a competitive environment, candidates can find themselves rejected because they fail to understand what a university is seeking. Other issues – such as a poorly delivered lecture, a misjudged audience, a disorganized CV, or an unsatisfactory personal interaction – can undermine a strong candidate. Understanding a college’s overall position within the complicated American university system also will help you craft a good self-presentation. Topics of discussion for this class also will include the balance of research, teaching, and administration required in academic positions, and strategies for addressing it. We will cover the organization and history of the American university and college, and the changing role of the humanities professor. Requirements for the P/NP course are attendance, meeting with the professor, presenting a talk for class critique, and active participation.
