Chinese Cities: Lived and Imagined
CHN400M/500M or HIST400M/500M
Instructors – Luke Habberstad & Ina Asim

From pre-modern times through the present, some of the largest cities in the world have been located in China. This course explores literary, visual, and historical evidence for these cities. Students will study the economic, political, and social fortunes of Chinese cities and also analyze poems, paintings, and novels in order to understand changing images of the city over time. Materials will focus on three different cities (Chang’an, Hangzhou, and Beijing). The course includes a field trip to Portland to visit the Lansu Garden. Students can enroll in either CHN 400/500M or HIST 400/500M which will be team taught by Habberstad (EALL) and Asim (History).
