This course will provide a thorough introduction to the linguistic study of Korean. The course is suitable firstly for students who are learning (or who have learned) Korean and would like to know more about the language and connect with it on a more academic level. Secondly, it is suitable for students interested in linguistics who would like to pursue particular specialization in Korean.

During the course, we will look at several important areas within Korean linguistics including phonology, syntax and pragmatics. We will also examine culture-specific areas of the language including the diverging language policies of North and South Korea, the position of writing systems on the Korean peninsula, the use of honorifics and gender differences.

By the end of the course, students will have a good understanding of key theories and concepts regarding both the structure and the social projection of the Korean language.
